IL CINEMA HORROR
The thrill king and his associates
by Valentina Venturi
It was the time when ingenuity, creativity and imagination were lavished on horror cinema. The years in which the unthinkable was achieved with few means available, where coffee grounds were transformed into clouds of insects and the vivid colours of Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs stimulated atmospheres of horror. The years in which Dario Argento gave life to milestones of the thriller genre such as Deep Red (1975), Suspiria (1977), Phenomena (1985), passing through The Stendhal Syndrome (1996), up to the recent Dracula 3D.
«Yet the story on its own is not enough – specifies the director who is about to shoot his twentieth horror film titled Black Glasses – you have to give emotions even with the colours, the shots. Horror cinema is not only made up of killings but also inventions, ideas, colours. For this reason, when you work with costume designers, production designers, directors of photography and musicians, you cannot speak of workers: they are artists with whom you establish a continuous dialogue. It is a team work with who has the idea trying to achieve it at its best».
This is firmly stated not only by the thrill master possibly eligible for a 2021 Academy Honorary Award for his career («a group of American filmmakers proposed my name for this award: we’ll see if the academy accepts»), but also by all of his “artists”.
